Did you know that there is a limit to the number of people you can follow on TikTok?
If you try to follow people too fast, TikTok will stop you (claiming you're following people too fast) and tell you to slow down. If you're trying to follow too many accounts overall, TikTok won't let you either.
But what exactly are these limits? Is there a way to bypass them?
In this article, we cover everything you need to know about following limits on TikTok.
Table of contents
How many TikTok accounts can you follow in total?
It seems that TikTok has a hard cap on all TikTok users, so you can't follow more than 10,000 accounts in total.
This number seems completely reasonable and is in line with other social networks. For example, on Facebook you can have up to 5,000 friends, and on Instagram you can only follow 7,500 people.
If you think about it, this makes a lot of sense.
The average person only really knows about 600 people. While you'll obviously want to view more than 600 pieces of content, TikTok's 10,000 follow limit is quite reasonable.
You can't possibly remember 10,000 different content creators. And even with an average TikTok length of 15 seconds, it would take you over 41 hours to watch a single video from each person.
There's just no practical reason to follow 10,000+ accounts.
TikTok may have implemented this limit to prevent spammers and marketers from following tens of thousands of people hoping to be tracked.
While this is still common practice to some extent, TikTok also limits tracking based on time, which we'll get to now.
How Many TikTok Accounts Can You Follow Per Day? At present?
Ever quickly follow multiple TikTok accounts just to get the next message?
"You're moving too fast."
Oh, "You're playing too fast. Take a break!"
This is because TikTok limits the rate at which you can follow new accounts to prevent spam and other malicious activity.
But what are these limits?
As a general rule of thumb, you can follow around 25-30 accounts per hour and no more than 200 accounts per day.
If you try to follow people faster, you'll get a message letting you know you're following too fast, and the following won't happen.
Note, however, that there don't seem to be any clearly defined boundaries. It looks like TikTok is handling this one-to-one.
For example, legitimate accounts that have been around for a long time may have slightly more lenient limits.
TikTok implementations follow boundaries to prevent spam and other bad behavior. Knowing they'll get banned quickly, spammers may try to follow as many people as possible before they get caught, so they need to be more restrictive on them.
New accounts have yet to prove their trust in TikTok's eyes, so your limits might be a bit tighter.
How long does it take for the "You're speeding" message to go away?
Any error message about following TikTok accounts too quickly usually goes away within a few hours.
However, the exact time can also be account-specific.
If you tend to trigger this error message frequently, TikTok may restrict your account for longer.
If you follow people immediately after you've been allowed to follow them again, they may block you faster and for a longer period of time.
Does following a group of people activate shadowbans?
TikTok hasn't officially commented on this, but it looks like it has!
This is because shadowbans are often caused by spam behavior.
TikTok wants to make sure people aren't trying to "play the system" so to speak, they want accounts that are justifiably interesting.and high qualityto get the attention they deserve.
Attempting to artificially increase your follower count by following others can be considered spam behavior, which can result in temporary shadow bans.
Use:The fondness for spam can also lead to shadowbans!
How to bypass TikTok's follow limits
Let's say you want to follow more people after you reach 10,000 accounts, or you want to follow more people per hour. Is there anything you can do?
Unfortunately not much. Despitecould you create a second tiktok accountanother 10,000 to follow, this is far from an ideal solution.
However, with so many accounts on your list below, it's likely that some are no longer active.
Whether they haven't posted in a while or the accounts have been banned for violating the community guidelines, TikTok will keep them on your watchlist until you remove them.
So you can go through your list and delete it to free up additional space. As long as your account still exists, your profile picture is gone.
Luckily, this makes them easy to spot!
Follow/Unfollow on TikTok: good or bad?
One of the most common reasons people follow large numbers of TikTok accounts is because they participate in a TikTok growth strategy called follow/unfollow.
The premise of this strategy is that you follow a group of people who are interested in the type of content you post and hope that a good percentage of them will notice and follow you.
Some people go even further and invest in bots and other tools to do this automatically.
While follow/non-follow can work to a degree, it is a strategy to avoid.
Why?
Firstly, it goes against the guidelines of the TikTok community and can result in shadowbans and account suspensions. As mentioned above, TikTok wants to prevent any spam behavior or attempts to trick the algorithm.
Second, the types of followers you would attract aren't actually people you want to follow.
A lot of people just follow you to be nice, not because they are genuinely interested in your content.
The problem arises when you think about how TikTok's algorithm works. When you post a video and not even your own followers are watching, the TikTok sends a lot of negative signals. This will limit exposure to new people through the For You page.
Ultimately, true organic growth on TikTok is what sets you up for long-term success, not spam tactics just to increase your follower count.
Diploma
In fact, TikTok adheres to limits and all accounts must adhere to them.
You can currently follow no more than 200 accounts per day and no more than 10,000 accounts in total.
Fortunately, these limits are perfectly reasonable and most people will never cross them.
